The new research and development center will be located next to the Mustankorkea biogas plant.
Developing high-value activated carbon
A central focus of the R&D Center is the development of activated carbon from different biogenic feedstocks.
Our process produces activated carbon alongside CO-rich gas. The R&D Center allows us to investigate how feedstock selection and operating conditions influence the properties of the carbon, and to develop grades for different industrial applications.
The work focuses on product consistency, performance and suitability for customer requirements. Potential applications include water and gas purification, industrial processes and advanced materials.
With a nominal capacity of 0.1 MW, the facility is designed to produce approximately 50 kg of activated carbon per day, providing material for testing and customer qualification.

"Methane is an attractive downstream product because it is easier to store, transport and use in existing infrastructure than hydrogen or syngas directly. At this stage, the priority is to understand how the entire value chain performs and to ensure that the methane meets the quality requirements of its intended use.

From captured CO₂ to renewable methane
The R&D Center also supports the development of a complete CO₂-to-methane value chain. In connection with the centre, Reduciner, Mustankorkea and Cefmof Hydrogen will carry out a methanation pilot to explore the production of renewable methane from carbon dioxide generated in Mustankorkea's biogas production and hydrogen produced by Cefmof Hydrogen in Jyväskylä.
Biogenic CO₂ from Mustankorkea’s operations is converted into CO-rich gas using Reduciner’s technology. The gas can then be combined with hydrogen supplied by Cefmof Hydrogen to produce synthetic methane through methanation.
The objective is to evaluate how the different process stages operate together, including gas quality, process integration and the suitability of the resulting methane for its intended use.
The collaboration provides practical experience in connecting CO₂ conversion with downstream fuel production and helps identify the requirements for future industrial applications.
Mustankorkea CEO
"For Mustankorkea, this collaboration is a natural next step in developing the local circular economy. The carbon dioxide separated at our biogas plant is a valuable feedstock. We can now explore how Reduciner's technology and hydrogen produced in Jyväskylä can be used to convert it into methane that Mustankorkea can use as a transport fuel. A small-scale research setting is a good way to build knowledge for the next stages."

Commercialisation
R&D centre supports technology commercialisation
The R&D Center complements Reduciner’s larger demonstration programm by providing a flexible environment for process development and product optimisation.
The results will support the engineering of larger installations, the qualification of activated carbon products and the development of customer-specific solutions.
Together, these activities help establish the technical and commercial foundations for scaling Reduciner’s technology to industrial applications.
Business Finland is funding the research project carried out at the R&D centre. The centre is expected to become operational by the end of 2026, with the first tests scheduled to begin in early 2027.
