1 MW Industrial Pilot

Demonstrating industrial-scale CO₂ conversion and activated carbon production

Reduciner’s pilot plant in Ranua, Finland, marks an important step towards the industrial commercialisation of our technology. The 1 MW facility is designed to demonstrate continuous conversion of captured CO₂ and biogenic carbon into CO-rich gas and high-value activated carbon.

Unlike our R&D Center in Jyväskylä, which focuses on product development and process optimisation, the Ranua pilot will demonstrate the performance of the technology in an integrated industrial environment. The facility will also enable the production of activated carbon for commercial customers.

The investment decision has been made in October 2026, with construction on-going and operations targeted for late 2027.

From technology validation to industrial operation

The Ranua pilot is designed to demonstrate the key capabilities required for scaling Reduciner’s technology to commercial installations.

The facility integrates an electrically heated CO₂ conversion reactor with continuous solids handling, activated carbon processing and gas treatment. The development programme will focus on stable long-duration operation, process control, product consistency and the performance of the integrated system.

The results will provide essential operating data for the engineering and development of larger commercial plants.

Te process planned for Ranua will be designed for a one-megawatt gas power capacity. The facility will be capable of producing both CO-rich synthesis gas and activated carbon at an industrially relevant scale.

Producing activated carbon for commercial applications

Activated carbon is a central part of the Ranua pilot’s commercial objectives.

The facility will produce activated carbon from biogenic carbon, supporting the development of a European supply of high-performance carbon materials. Building on the results achieved at laboratory scale and at our Jyväskylä R&D Center, the Ranua pilot will focus on consistent industrial production and the qualification of products for customer applications.

Target applications include water and gas purification, industrial processes and other uses requiring high-quality activated carbon.

The objective is to move from product development and customer testing towards regular commercial deliveries.

Project overview

Reduciner’s first industrial-scale pilot plant in Ranua, Finland, will demonstrate continuous production of activated carbon and CO-rich gas while preparing the technology for larger commercial installations.

Building the foundation for commercial scale-up

The Ranua pilot is an important step in Reduciner’s scale-up roadmap, bridging the gap between research and larger commercial installations.

The facility will generate operating data and practical experience in continuous industrial operation, equipment integration, maintenance, automation and product quality management.

The results will support the development of Reduciner’s first commercial 5–10 MW installations and, subsequently, larger modular plants.

The project is being developed in cooperation with industrial partners and is supported by public funding for activated carbon production and related technology development.

By combining industrial technology validation with the production of commercially relevant products, the Ranua pilot will help establish the technical and commercial foundations for Reduciner’s next phase of growth.
